The forum's pretty quiet, so I don't expect anyone will be playing, but.........

Is anyone else playing this?

I wasn't a fan of XII on release, but time has been very kind. I always know the battle system was great, I just had forgotten how good it was. It's a dream to play.

The lead character is a twat, but I'm happy to ignore that this time around.

Why on earth (considering how long the old systems of FF stuck around) didn't they stick with this formula and battle system, it's perfect. It can be had for 30 notes and truly a joy.

I jumped from FF8 to 13, so missed out on the PS2 era ones. What's the deal with the battle system in 12 then?

It's very much like the original Xenoblade Chronicle system. Xenoblade seems influenced by XII in a few other ways as well.

The battle system has something called gambits. Gambits are essentially the orders you give your team in battle. For example, "use heal on team-mates when health falls below 30%".

You can even set your own controlled player to run on gambits, given the battles full auto control. Even if you went full 100% gambits (I don't), you never feel out of control. Jumping in and changing orders is fluid. You actually buy more orders, rather than unlocking them (Also similar to Knights of the Old Republic). As it goes on, it becomes more and more fluid and nuanced, with you quickly and easily changing your orders to suit.

It seems odd that they never kept the combat. FFXIII was interesting, but often felt clunky and XV is......clumsy, but the game often feels clumsy.

Only thing aged in Zodiac is movement and camera, but nothing as bad as XV in terms of poor camera and it makes up for it by being a real joy to play.

I loved the battle system and a lot of people hated it for some reason ?
I will pick this up in a month or 2 when its cheaper as i'm not into playing much these days.
