How's it going Angus?

2 weeks on from finishing and I'm starting to see the benefits of having a plan rather than just going out for a run. I've been doing some longer distances which have been mostly ok (did a 7k this week!). But it felt best when I used an interval timer app to help pace myself to go slow for 5 minutes then push harder for a minute. So think I'll play around with that and increase the faster segments each week

Nice going Ben and a good idea. I completed my first marathon on Sunday and loved it, so much better when you run with people, it took me 5 hours and 5 minutes. I could of finished under the 5 hour mark but slowed down to avoid anything untoward happening

So, I finished the programme this on Wednesday this week, final run with Sarah Millican urging me on.

So, this Friday, I did my first run without the app. I set myself a target of 6 laps of my local park, that being more than I'd done before whilst using the app. In the end, when I saw that this would be slightly less than 5k, I decide to keep going to 5K, then rounded that up to 7 laps.

Took me 37.5 minutes in the end. Not amazingly fast or anything, but it's the distance that counts at this stage. I felt like I could have kept going actually, but I didn't want to push my luck, and it wasn't something I'd planned.

However, of all the various bits of my legs that have ached or twinged whilst doing this, it was a new one that cropped up - my Achilles tendons. After the run on Friday, I've been kind of hobbling around, not too bad really, but definitely sore and affecting my walk. Very odd, these haven't cropped up at all so far, so I'm a tad confused.

Based on the run-then-one-rest-day pattern I should be due a run tomorrow, but I'm wary of pushing my tendons.

I'm all over the place a bit next week with work, so not sure when I'll get to run, and with the clock going back tonight, it may get tricky to get a regular schedule going.

Give it a few days at least Angus, if you're in any sort of pain / discomfort at rest there's no point pushing it. And when you start back, just do a very gentle slow one to see how you get on.

If you haven't been doing it already, look into some warmup exercises (YouTube is a great resource), there may be some that you can do to help recover. I found doing gentle ankle circles and pointing my toes to the floor then ceiling good when I was struggling with ankle pain, and building that into a more structured warmup routine alongside the pre-run walk has helped me stay issue free since my week 2 trouble (touch wood!)

As the other guys have said rest and some warm up exercises help. It’s easy to fall into the I can keep going trap. I had trouble with my ankles and knees when I started to up my distance. I got my gait analysed and learned some exercises which helped

Right, so, I ran on Sunday morning, as my ankles were feeling ok. Went fine, another 7 lap, 5K+ run.

Legs definitely feeling it afterwards, in the calves, so working around about gingerly. So planning my next run for tomorrow, sneaky lunchtime thanks to working at home, waiting for Virgin Media engineer visit, third time lucky.

Just joined Stava, seems I can import my old runs from Runtastic. Looks s but bare compared to Runtastic though, doesn’t track mileage on your shoes!

It does track shoe mileage, you have to add them via the website under gear and I think you would then have to edit your old activities to add them
