Had an argument with a colleague at work who reckons that blu-rays are no different to upscaled dvds in terms of picture quality. Got accused of having an "emperors new clothes" mentality.

Fool! Blu-rays are shitloads better than dvds. And I haven't bought new clothes in ages.

I watched Ice Age 3 on blu-ray with the kids the other day and it also includes the dvd version. The difference is incredible and if you cant see the difference then its time to get down to specsavers. If you're still undecided about blu-ray then dont be. Blu-Ray players can be picked up for under £100 now and the discs are falling in price all the time. Go get!

Yeah, if you get the right film they can look amazing, with Ice Age 3 being as good as it gets in my opinion, that nearly burned my eyes out.

I tend to find some of the older films actually look worse as it shows up any imperfections of poor quality filming. I bought Goodfellows on Bu-Ray and that looked awful!

But when it's a new film, the definitely look better. Anyone that disagrees then they must surely have a shyte TV ;-)

Did you do a Nory and cut and paste that from somewhere? The formatting is a little bit off ;)

It all depends on what your watching and the viewing distance.

Its all my own work lol. Not sure what was going on with the formatting, I've corrected it. I blame the Chrome web browser, seems to mess stuff up if I dare to put line breaks between paras.

Its all about the transfer really, while it does look better for new movies at the moment i dont feel its worth the price difference. On the high street in particular blu-ray still commands an extreme price, £27 for Adventureland in HMV!

It looks better for sure. But not enough to warrant the price differential as Mylo points out above. I'll stick with DVD unless the blu ray is on sale.

Not to mention I only have one Blu-Ray player which is in my game room and 5 devices that can play DVDs all over the place.

HMV are bollocks for pricing, Pitch Black was £35 not long ago lol. And they wonder why stock sits on their shelves for so long.

Jesus! I've just worked out that we have 14 devices that can play DVDs around the house. don't see Blu-Ray ever catching up to that. I've yet to even watch a Blu-Ray to be honest as I think they're too expensive. I rarely even buy DVD's, except stuff for the kids. I do have some HD-DVDs though & still fail to see what the fuss is/was about. I could see the limitations of DVD when I had my HD projector & 6' wide screen, but DVD is fine on my 40" TV.

Blu-Rays are better, but its the price of them that lets them down. Now I know you can hunt out bargins etc... and most new DVD releases are £15.99 but if u wait a month or so u can find them in the 3 for £20 section. Also I've accumulated a large DVD collection and I'm not prepared to replace then all with Blu-Ray plus I only have 1 Blu-Ray player and that my PS3.
