I just got back from seeing ghost in the shell and it is not a patch on the original and you can tell it's been dumbed down for the western audience, the special effects were good but my god did they have some really dodgy cgi

Thought Ghost in the Shell was ok actually, well, nowhere near as terrible as I had anticipated!

Get Out however was bloody fantastic. A really well crafted horror with a huge load of racial tension. Was actually very funny too. Not unlike an extended episode of Black Mirror, and kind of amazing that this was the director's debut film.

So.... I have just seen

Raw

There seems to be a bit of hype around this film. I just did a cursory glance at Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes at review scores, it seems I'm very much in the minority.

I didn't like it.

I like films to entertain, to provoke, to enlighten, to make me think*.... or just be very well made and leave me at leas thinking.

The premise - a vegetarian girl eats some raw meat and moves onto eating people. It's all very absurd without giving any reasons for the absurdities.

It didn't hang together for me and I didn't think it was a well-made film. The best thing about it for me was the two stunningly beautiful support actor and actress.
Shallow of me, so was this film.
I couldn't see any subtext or anything else beyond trying to shock.
I hope someone I know does see it, as I want to hear other opinions on this one.

Maybe I will change my mind when I have digested it.

Almost forgot that I watched Premium Rush and The Nice Guys.

Premium Rush
Not sure why it took me so long to watch this, the ideas used in the film worked quite well plus Michael Shannon was brilliant in this and that bike cop cracked me right up sometimes.

The Nice Guys
As I said on twitter I dunno what it is about crime films (even though this has a comedy element) set in the 70's/80's but they always seem to have a better result than one's set in modern day. Gosling and Crowe played their parts brilliantly and lord knows how they did it but they seem to have somehow deaged Keith David

Today I saw........

The Handmaiden

The latest from Park Chan-Wook of Oldboy/revenge trilogy.

It was a great yarn this, I really enjoyed it. It's..... an..... erotic........ thriller, I guess. What it was, is a great story very well and beautifully told. I kept on thinking the structure felt like a British parlour play .... Clearly, I do think a lot of bullshit.

Turns out it is based on a Welsh novel, which makes me like it even more, as it brings in so much of its own flavour.

Book ordered as well and it's a film I would happily sit through again - I don't often think that.

Saw The Handmaiden last night (The extended cut no less). Still trying to fully process my thoughts but I was completely blown away by it. While it has lots of steamy and sensual moments, it's much more than the erotic drama that some might see it for at first glance. The plot is the real driving force that paints an utterly compelling picture of crime and deception, twisting and turning all the way to the end.

I think this is by far Park Chan-Wook's most mature and accomplished work to date.

Also watched Raw which was perfectly fine. Not really that shocking, disgusting or particularly interesting in any way. Just felt a bit undercooked

Saw Alien Covenant today which was fairly decent. It's a damn sight better than Prometheus (which seems to get worse the more I watch it) but it didn't blow my socks off.

It does bridge the gap between Prometheus and Alien quite well and has some great acting turns but I think it lacks the fear and dread of the first film and, for me, the influence of HR Giger's wonderful design feels like a distant memory.
