Thank goodness for quality films.

Last night I saw Manchester by the Sea

Given the theme of the film was essentially grief, I wasn't sure I had made the right decision in going to see. I had, it's a good piece of film and melancholy often helps.

A man returns home after his brother dies and slowly the story unfolds of what drove him away from home.

A good slice of life and very reminiscent of a lot of European cinema.

I would say I really enjoyed that but it sent me spiraling into a deep depression for a few days. I think I just saw a bit too much of myself in Casey Affleck's wonderfully withdrawn performance, but it's good to watch films that push you sometimes, especially quality ones like this.

Saw Moonlight this week

Another beautiful and brilliant piece of filmmaking. A very tender look at a young man growing up trying to figure out who he is.

Looks really good. How did you see that, it isn't out until the end of the week?

Two weeks in a row of Scorcese.

I saw Taxi Driver.

It's still seminal, it's still disturbing, it's still shocking. First time I've seen it in the cinema, the music really is superb.

If you haven't seen Taxi Driver, please do. It's a masterclass of a film.

Get to see a fair few preview screenings with my unlimited cinema card (Cineworld). Great for that but I just wish they'd show a few more niche films every now and then. Getting better with English language indies, but any acclaimed foreign numbers are a bit harder to come by

Watched Storage 24 on amazon yesterday when I was trying and failed to sort out my body clock.

Its an alright film though the ending was a bit pointless, almost makes me want to sleep in a storage place like the guy that was trying to escape his ex

Saw Lego Batman today. Liked it quite a lot actually. Some great nods to previous Batmans and a damn sight better than that Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad nonsense we had last year.
After being thoroughly disappointed (and quite frankly bored) by John Wick Chapter 2 this was a very pleasant experience.

I saw Tony Erdmann

This is being billed as the 'German comedy' (perhaps just by myself).

It's a very good film, but it isn't the film I expected. When I said previously that Manchester by the Sea was reminiscent of a lot of European cinema, this is the sort of film I had in mind.

It is a comedy, but a very muted one and one that asks a lot of existential questions about who we 'are'.

Maybe it's my frame of mind. Like Ben saw himself in Manchester, I see myself in the Tony Erdmann character of this film and it's something I've been wrestling with myself of late.

It's near the 3 hour mark, that's too long. If you see it (it's well worth it and it is very funny at times), sneak in some good Scooby-snacks and get comfy.
