Thor: Ragnarok
For me, the last few Marvel films have felt a bit lacking; sticking to a formula a bit too much where they start feeling a bit boring and stale. Enter Taika Waititi to shake things up a bit. I was a big fan of his offbeat comedies like What we do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, so I was quite worried about how well he'd translate to a big budget blockbuster, but he's done a fantastic job.
While it may be another typical Marvel movie, it's done with so much fun and humour. Lots of quirky, strange humour too which constantly hits the mark.

It seems quite evident that they had a lot of fun making it and that translates to a very enjoyable watching experience. Loved it :-D

Finally got around to watching Arrival - liked it.

Any film with some Max Richter music in it can't be bad.

I saw Thor Ragnarok.....

I wasn't impressed for the first half an hour, but it drew me in.

Josh Weedon is calling it a masterpiece and critics seem to be all over it. I thought it was good and it should be applauded for trying something new. Like Ben said, that 'new' is humour and it does do it well.

Always great to see Jeff Goldblum and even nicer to see him camping it up to the max. Cate Blanchet playing the baddie was also gloriously camp. You can tell when people enjoyed making a film and I got that impression from this.

Will be interesting to see how the MCU develops over the next few years, as they're going to have to evolve to carry on.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer
*personally I'd avoid trailers for this one if you want to see it*

What can I say about this crazy film from Yorgos Lanthimos, director of Dogtooth and The Lobster ... it's unsurprisingly weird and has a very unsettling and uneasy tone throughout. The performances all seem to have an emotional disconnect and the orchestral score can ramp up to startle you which all add the state of unease I felt.

It's one of those films that will certainly rattle around your brain for a few days, a bit like Mother; not especially 'enjoyable' or 'fun' but certainly a very unique and interesting piece of work that I'm very glad exists.

I really want to see it, but I'm without a car for a few days

The Florida Project, new film from Sean Baker who did the rather fabulous Tangerine which looks at the poverty in Florida through the eyes of some cheeky kids.

Feels very much like a slice of life thing with not an awful lot happening but the whole thing comes together by the end and has quite a powerful and emotionally charged finale. The acting and dialogue has a very natural and free feel very much like Tangerine and it's refreshing to see Willem Dafoe put in a very subtle performance when he's known for hamming it up or being a villain. But the kids are the real standouts here.

I too saw The Florida Project

It's actually flawless. The use of actors/non-actors give it a natural feel and it's beautifully written and handled with deft.

I hope he carries the theme on in other films. Tangerine painted a bleak picture (but funny as fuck) of the Hollywood strip and showed how poor and desperate it actually is a stones throw from the glitter. This did the same with Florida and Disneyland. It's an interesting touch.

go see

I'm just back from seeing Call Me by Your Name

I hadn't read anything about this at all before going.

Turns out it was a very well made coming of age tale. Not something I would normally be interested in at all, but it's half-price Monday and the rest all looked like shit.

It was beautiful.
