I've been out of the loop for a while.

Today I saw.......

What a way to return. Kathryn Bigelow doing what she does well - that being, weaving stories with truth and historical fact to tell tales that* make sense of events.

My heart was in my mouth for the entire film. it's incredibly powerful. Go and see. It's the movie for our times, given all that's going on in America.

Mother!

Oh boy, what a crazy film. Interesting, weird, ridiculous, dark ... but mostly weird. I get the feeling this one will have a lot of polarising opinions but I think I lie somewhere in the middle.

Some interesting bits to chew on but I felt it was a bit chaotic overall.

I'm toying with going tomorrow..... I want to see IT as well, despite it being Hollywood horror. I think Mother might win my time for now.

I saw

mother!

I actually really liked (liked is the wrong word, it has some brutal scenes) it. I didn't have a clue what the fuck was going on, but I was hooked in and I wanted to see where it went.

By last scene I had come to a conclusion about what I thought it was about and that worked well for me.

It's certainly difficult to forget. Has kept my mind racing thinking about it (which you can't say about most other films).

Saw IT today, which was fine. Not quite the masterpiece I was expecting but very nostalgic for 80s films and some great performances from the kids.

The Villainess

Bloody marvellous action film from South Korea about a female assassin (think La Femme Nikita). Some truly astounding set pieces and a story that ticks along nicely with plenty of twists and turns along the way, really shows the likes of John Wick 2 how to do this type of shit properly. It caught me by surprise, much like watching Oldboy and The Raid for the first time, a really enjoyable delight :-D

I've seen a few......

I saw IT

It was good enough for what it was, that being a run of the mill horror film - done well enough. It could have been a lot better. It didn't utilise Pennywise enough, the physicality that Bill Skarsgard brought to the role was superb.

It made me want to go and read the book.

I also saw Blade Runner 2049

I thought it was perfection in tone and imagery and I really liked how they managed to move the story along. It was a classic in my eyes and I think people will be talking about this film as such in years to come. It seems to be dividing opinion.

There's a certain quality about Denis Villeneuve's films, I find they hold up very well on repeat viewings. I was completely floored when I saw Arrival again and now feel much happier after watching Blade Runner 2049 again. I wouldn't say I was particularly down on it, I did find some of the story beats dull or rather predictable and it felt too long, but had a right big chubbie about the whole visual and audio design (Deakins' use of light, dark shadows and colour in particular is sublime).
I do feel much happier with the slow pacing and I'm now mulling over whether I might actually like it more than the original Blade Runner.

Well worth a watch (or two!)
